About Me

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The Man who never reads lives only one."
- George R. R. Martin
However, the dream of living a thousand lives disappeared throughout my teen-years and was replaced by dreams of music and history - something I was told was more of a 'real job'. It was only in university when I started proof-reading theses that I remembered the whole editor idea.
And so it may no longer be a dream job, and I might not get paid for it, but I decided to start a blog because I'm reading all these amazing books that are teaching me so much, so why not write about it.
Over time this blog has turned into something a bit more though. I have never been one to journal because I feel like it very quickly turns into a sad cry of a teenager. Maybe I just don't know how to journal properly. But I found that this blog has turned into an outlet for me as well as creating a space to review books. I am able to document things I am learning and things that have helped me. So throughout these pages you will see a journey through life, books, and university because that is the stage I am in at the moment. Over time this might change, but for now, this is it.

I hope you enjoy this journey that I'm embarking on and that you find as much enjoyment in these pages as I do.

I'd love to hear what you guys think, if you've read the same books and even what recommendations you may have for me to read. Let's start a conversation.
Until later,
Michaela.
Why not? I guess that that is the question everything we do always boils down to. Why not start a blog?
My name is Michaela. Michaela Jane Ruth Selway. I am an avid historian, an avid music teacher/musician, and above all, an avid reader.
I am 22 years old, living in Auckland, New Zealand, with my amazing husband, Luke. I just completed my MASTERS (!!!!) in History. I completed my undergrad in 2013 with a BA in History and Spanish. To say I love languages would be a total understatement. I LOVE languages. I did German all through high-school, went to school in Germany for a bit and one day dream of living there full-time, even if it's just for a short while. I part-time teach music at a local music school, mostly vocals, piano, guitar, theory and violin.
Many people ask me why it is that I am continuing my studies (fun-fact: I want
to get my PhD one day). Partly because I am interested in it and I have always set super high goals for myself. But I also think it is because I love writing. At first, I thought I loved writing fiction. But after discovering history, especially Biblical History, I couldn't quite stop. I didn't quite have the knack for writing fiction. Despite this, I never lost my passion for reading.
I remember a time back in youth group where we were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up - our ultimate this-will-never-happen job. We were to write it down and share it with only our group. I never understood the point of the exercise, but it certainly made an impact. I wrote down that I wanted to be an editor. I wanted to proof-read never-before-seen-or-read books. That was my dream. To be wrapped up in a thousand different lives. To experience it.
It turns out that this is summed up quite nicely in a quote that I read years ago and re-discovered not too long ago.
